Bergdahl's hometown is canceling a celebration for the returned sergeant at the end of the month amidst a rising backlash A rally in U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's Idaho hometown celebrating his release after nearly five years of captivity has been canceled amid growing questions about the circumstances of the soldier's capture. The joy over Bergdahl's return among residents of the small mountain community of Hailey, Idaho has been dampened by claims that he abandoned his post. Some have also claimed that the subsequent search for Bergdahl cost the lives of up to six soldiers. Hailey's city administrator, Heather Dawson said town officials called off the June 28 rally at the request of organizers. The town"will be unable to safely manage the number of people expected," But residents say they support Bergdahl either way and that they're continuing to prepare for a June 28 rally in his honor. "People in Hailey have been aware for some time that there were questions about how Bowe came to be captured, and that there was a chance that Bowe could be in trouble when he came home," said Stefanie O'Neill, a rally co-organizer.The backlash over Bergdahl's release reached a fever pitch early this week amid reports that the White House overrode interagency security processes to free five Taliban higher-ups in exchange for Bergdahl's release. There has also been increasing scrutiny of Bergdahl's absence from his post in Afghanistan before his capture.

It seems as though the good people of his home town could no longer justify a welcome back party for a man surrounded by controversy and mounting accusations of desertion and worse. Good on them. "The hometown of U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has canceled a rally planned for later this month celebrating his release from five years of Taliban captivity, a municipal official told Reuters on Wednesday, amid allegations that he was a deserter. Heather Dawson, the city administrator of Hailey, Idaho, said town officials called off the June 28 event at the request of organizers because the town "will be unable to safely manage the number of people expected." A poll is in order.

HAILEY, Idaho - This small, central Idaho city of about 8,000 is wilting in the international spotlight brought by what was supposed to be a joyous occasion, and a much-anticipated celebration welcoming back a long-lost son has been canceled. For years, the town has rallied, hoped and prayed for the return of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the polite and sensitive boy who was home-schooled by his parents, attended Sovereign Redeemer Presbyterian Church, took ballet lessons in nearby Ketchum and worked as a barista at Zaney's coffee shop on River Street before enlisting in the Army in 2008. Captured by the Taliban a year into his tour, Bergdahl was held for five years until Saturday's dramatic announcement that he'd been swapped for five of Guantanamo Bay's most dangerous prisoners. "All of America is watching your little town and hoping the right thing is done."- Email sent to town of Hailey, Idaho But the jubilation that followed his release has given way to confusion and fear, as questions about whether Bergdahl was a deserter have surfaced. City Hall has been inundated with angry letters and emails from around the country. The long-planned "Welcome Back, Bowe" celebration, planned for June 28 in Hop Porter Park, was canceled Wednesday amid growing claims by Bergdahl's fellow soldiers that he deserves no honor."This man deserves no welcome," reads one of the many emails City Administrator Heather Dawson has fielded at City Hall. "His reward is being alive, unlike the brave soldiers who actually followed their orders and continued to search for him knowing full well he had deserted his post.""You and anyone else involved in organizing this farce of a celebration should be ashamed of yourselves," reads another. Some employees and the businesses that have supported Bowe's release have received angry messages from people both around the country and even from within the once close-knit community. Dawson calls the issue "polarizing," and says the small town can feel the world eyes, through the convoy of television trucks and journalists that have descended into the picturesque Wood River Valley. On Wednesday afternoon, Dawson issued a press release saying, "In the interest of public safety, the event will be canceled. Hailey, a town of 8,000 does not have the infrastructure to support an event of the size this could become. ""All of America is watching your little town and hoping the right thing is done," read one e-mail. But others write in support of Bergdahl, his hometown and the American president who struck a pricey deal to bring home America's last remaining prisoner of war. "The President knows very well that we cannot leave an American behind, no matter the case. His decision is right and patriotic. The outcry that follows is more of the same. The outcry comes from circles that hate President Obama from the first day in the Oval Office. It is not only sad but also despicable that the hate for the President is now being visited upon Bowe Bergdahl. ""I think that most of these people that are passing judgment have no idea, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Let's get him home and then things can be looked into. But lets not forget that he's spent five years in captivity for whatever reasons this happened." While the nation debates Bergdahl's just deserts, most Hailey residents stay defiantly positive that their hometown soldier has been freed. The yellow ribbons still circle trees and signs saying "Bowe is free at last!" hang in front of shops. Most folks are glad Bergdahl is safe, and willing to reserve judgment about what he did."It's not like he's been vacationing at Disneyland for five years," said Sherry Horton, a former roommate of Bergdahl, told Fox News. "He's been going through a lot so not only should we find out the truth but also take into account everything that's happened over the five years." Sue Martin, who has been a spokeswoman for the Bergdahl family, said the town will stand by Bergdahl. "We're going to have somebody here who's going to need our support and help and the transition back into his life," said Martin. "Bowe's going to write the next chapter in his book supposedly right here in Hailey and we'll see what his needs are, he's going to have to have some privacy I'm sure absolutely and the military of course will get him started on that road to healing - physically, emotionally and psychologically. We'll be his support system for what he needs." But as Fox News interviewed townspeople whose bemusement at the media attention has quickly given way to annoyance, one man approached to offer his opinion. "He's a deserter, you know," he said, before striding away. From left, PFC Matthew Martinek, SSG Kurt Curtiss, PFC Morris Walker, SSG Clayton Bowen, 2LT Darryn Andrews, SSG Michael Murphy. This undated image provided by the U.S. Army shows Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The case of Bergdahl, held by the Taliban since 2009, has arisen again as the U.S. and other countries engage in diplomatic efforts to end his capture. But if he is released, will America^aEURTMs only prisoner of the Afghan war be viewed as a deserter! A top Republican senator called Monday for an "immediate hearing" to investigate the controversial release of five Taliban prisoners in exchange for American Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's freedom, as he and others raised alarm that the administration just freed the "Taliban Dream Team." he dropped his gun off while on guard duty and walked away to help the terrorist. Robert Bergdahl father speaks arabic as obama smiles hearing the arabic language spoken Lt. Darryn Andrews left a pregnant wife and son behind when he saved six fellow soldiers at the expense of his own life. But his family never knew his true mission-until now. When he saw the Taliban fighter pop up and prepare to fire a rocket-propelled grenade, Lt. Darryn Andrews could have saved himself by diving for cover. Andrews certainly had the biggest possible reasons to live. He had a son who was not yet 2. His wife was pregnant with their second child. His parents had already lost a daughter to illness. And he had a twin brother who was sure to be devastated beyond measure by his death. But 34-year-old Andrews was a soldier to the core and the very best kind of officer. He spent that final moment pushing the sergeant and the radio man on either side of him out of the way while leaving himself directly in the deadly projectile's path. He used his last breath to call out a warning to the five other soldiers around him. "RPG!" In the next instant, Andrews took a direct hit and the brunt of the explosion. His radio man, 20-year-old Pfc. Matthew Martinek, was still so badly wounded that he died after being medevaced. But the sergeant survived, as did the soldiers who took cover on hearing Andrews's warning. The citation that accompanied his posthumous Silver Star correctly reported the fallen officer's heroism: "Second Lieutenant Andrews fatally placed himself between the incoming enemy fire and his fellow comrades. His courage under fire was essential in saving another Soldier's life, and saving the lives of five other Soldiers who were with him." By the official count, Andrews had saved a total of six fellow soldiers at the expense of his own life. And that remarkable number makes it only more outrageous that the U.S. Army lied to Andrews's family after his death. The lie was about his unit's mission in Afghanistan on that September day in 2009 when it ran into the deadly ambush. In the aftermath, the Army told the family that Andrews's unit had set out to capture a top Taliban commander. Lt. Darin Andrews (via Facebook)Only this past Sunday did the family learn that the commander had already been grabbed earlier in the day and that the unit had been ordered to continue on another mission. The added mission was the ongoing search for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had apparently slipped away from his post in July, leaving his body armor and weapon but taking a compass. The Andrews family was told the truth by soldiers who had served with Andrews, including the sergeant he had saved by pushing him from harm's way in his final living instant. The soldiers further informed the family that they had been ordered not to reveal their true mission, lest it complicate the hunt for Bergdahl. They even had been forced to sign nondisclosure agreements. With the news that Bergdahl had been freed, the soldiers felt they were themselves now free to tell the family the full story. The official lie that the unit's supposed mission had been to capture an enemy commander assumed a cruel irony with word that Bergdahl had been exchanged for five top Taliban commanders who had been grabbed earlier in the war. But cruelest of all was the very fact that the military had misled the family when it could have quietly told them the facts with a caution to keep it to themselves. "On one hand, you're not all that surprised," the fallen soldier's father, Andy Andrews, said on Tuesday. "But still, when you have lost your son, you hate it." In an added twist, Darryn Andrews's maternal grandfather was a POW during World War II after being captured during the Battle of the Bulge. His paternal grandfather and his father both served in the Air Force. Darryn himself had wanted to go into the military since he was 14. He had originally enlisted in the Marines but had been shipped home after a physical injury. He had become a high school football coach, proving the lasting difference the right person can make in a teen's life. "I'm glad his parents have him back," the father said of Bergdahl. "But there is no honor in the way it happened."That was suddenly not enough after 9/11."He came home one day and said he joined," the father recalled. "I said, 'There you go.'" Darryn served a tour in Afghanistan as an enlisted man. The Army was impressed enough to make him an officer before he headed back for a second tour. "Somebody had to go defend the country, and he felt he was one to do it," the father said. Then came the September 4, 2009, ambush. Darryn had been traveling in a motorized patrol when the lead vehicle was hit by an IED. He and seven of his soldiers were seeking to extricate the vehicle from the resulting crater when he saw a Taliban fighter appear with an RPG launcher at the ready. The moment arrived when Darryn saved six fellow soldiers when he could have saved himself. The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church in Darryn's hometown of Cameron, Texas. The local police and fire departments provided an escort for his flag-covered coffin. The family insisted that military mourners be seated up front. The speakers included his twin, Jarrett, who had played high school football with him and was now a lawyer. "When you get older, people get cynical, but he never did," said Jarrett said of Darryn. Darryn was buried in Fort Sam Houston cemetery in San Antonio a week after his son's second birthday. He was subsequently awarded the Silver Star, and at the ceremony, one of his soldiers spoke to the father about this enlisted man turned officer. "He never forgot where he came from," the soldier said.

You Will Be Missed My Brother. Friend of my Older Brother, his Mentor and Teacher. JOHNNY WINTER DIED YESTERDAY 07/16/2014 One of my Hero's, Saw him play Live, Was a great honor to be 5' feet from him. One of the Great Leagends has passed My Heart Hurts. Sad Day in Black Rock. He is out on Hwy 61 for the final Ride. R.I.P. Johnny May God be with You and Yours. John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 - July 16, 2014), better known as Johnny Winter , was an American blues guitarist , singer , and producer . Best known for his high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and '70s, Winter also produced three Grammy Award -winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters . After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the " 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time ". Early career Johnny Winter, along with his musician brother Edgar Winter (born 1946), were nurtured at an early age by their parents in musical pursuits. Johnny and his brother, both of whom were born with albinism , began performing at an early age. When he was ten years old, Winter appeared on a local children's show, playing ukulele and singing Everly Brothers songs with his brother. His recording career began at the age of fifteen, when his band Johnny and the Jammers released "School Day Blues" on a Houston record label. During this same period, he was able to see performances by classic blues artists such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King , and Bobby Bland . In the early days Winter would sometimes sit in with Roy Head and the Traits when they performed in the Beaumont, Texas area, and in 1967, Winter recorded a single with the Traits: " Tramp " backed with " Parchman Farm " (Universal Records 30496). In 1968, he released his first album The Progressive Blues Experiment , on Austin's Sonobeat Records. In 1970, when his brother Edgar released a solo album Entrance and formed Edgar Winter's White Trash , an R&B/jazz-rock group, the original trio disbanded. Johnny Winter then formed a new band with the remnants of The McCoys -guitarist Rick Derringer , bassist Randy Jo Hobbs , and drummer Randy Z (who was Derringer's brother, their family name being Zehringer). Originally to be called "Johnny Winter and The McCoys", the name was shortened to "Johnny Winter And", which was also the name of their first album . The album included Derringer's " Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo " and signaled a more rock-oriented direction for Winter. When Johnny Winter And began to tour, Randy Z was replaced with drummer Bobby Caldwell . Their mixture of the new rock songs with Winter's blues songs was captured on the live album Live Johnny Winter And . It included a new performance "It's My Own Fault", the song which brought Winter to the attention of Columbia Records. Winter's momentum was throttled when he sank into heroin addiction during the Johnny Winter And days. After he sought treatment for and recovered from the addiction, Winter was courageously put in front of the music press by manager Steve Paul to discuss the addiction candidly. By 1973, he returned to the music scene with the release of Still Alive and Well , a basic blend between blues and hard rock, whose title track was written by Rick Derringer. His comeback concert at Long Island, New York 's Nassau Coliseum featured the "And" line-up minus Rick Derringer and Bobby Caldwell. Also performing on stage was Johnny's wife Susie. The follow-up album, John Dawson Winter III featured "Sweet Papa John," a highly dubbed slow blues number written by Johnny, which also appeared in an extended version on the later issued "Captured Live." Saints & Sinners , continued the same direction; this was followed by another concert set, the aforementioned Captured Live! , which featured an extended performance of "Highway 61 Revisited". In 1975 Johnny returned to Bogalusa, Louisiana, to produce an album for Thunderhead, a Southern rock band which included Pat Rush and Bobby "T" Torello, who would later play with Winter. Muddy Waters sessions In live performances, Winter often told the story about how, as a child, he dreamed of playing with the blues guitarist Muddy Waters . In 1977, after Waters' long-time label Chess Records went out of business, he got his chance. Winter brought Waters into the studio to record Hard Again for Blue Sky Records , a label set up by Winter's manager and distributed by Columbia. In addition to producing the album, Winter played guitar with Waters veteran James Cotton on harmonica. Winter produced two more studio albums for Waters, I'm Ready (with Big Walter Horton on harmonica) and King Bee and a best-selling live album Muddy "Mississippi" Waters - Live . The partnership produced three Grammy Awards for Waters and an additional Grammy for Winter's own Nothin' But the Blues , with backing by members of Waters' band. Waters told Deep Blues author Robert Palmer that Winter had done remarkable work in reproducing the sound and atmosphere of Waters's vintage Chess Records recordings of the 1950s. The albums gave Waters the highest profile and greatest financial successes of his life.Winter produced three Grammy Award -winning albums by Muddy Waters, Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters - Live (1979). Several Winter albums were also nominated for Grammy Awards. In 1980, Winter was on the cover of the first issue of Guitar World and in 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame. There was a character in the video game Heavy Rain named after Winter. After his time with Blue Sky Records, Winter began recording for several labels, including Alligator , Point Blank , and Virgin , where he focused on blues-oriented material. In 2004, he received a Grammy Award nomination for his I'm a Bluesman album. Beginning in 2007, a series of live Winter albums titled the Live Bootleg Series and a live DVD all entered the Top 10 Billboard Blues chart. In 2009, The Woodstock Experience album was released, which includes eight songs that Winter performed at the 1969 festival. In 2011, Johnny Winter released a new studio album titled Roots on Megaforce Records . It included Winter's interpretation of eleven early blues and rock 'n' roll classics and features several guest artists ( Vince Gill , Sonny Landreth , Susan Tedeschi , Edgar Winter, Warren Haynes , and Derek Trucks ). Winter continued to perform live, including at festivals throughout North America and Europe. He headlined such prestigious events as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival , Chicago Blues Festival , the 2009 Sweden Rock Festival , The Warren Haynes Christmas Jam , and Rockpalast . He also performed with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater in New York City on the 40th anniversary of their debut. In 2007 and 2010, Winter performed at Eric Clapton 's Crossroads Guitar Festivals . Two guitar instructional DVDs were produced by Cherry Lane Music and the Hal Leonard Corporation . The Gibson Guitar Company released the signature Johnny Winter Firebird guitar in a ceremony in Nashville with Slash presenting.Winter remained active until shortly before his death in Zurich , Switzerland , on 16 July 2014. Rock Legend Johnny Winter Dies, 70

GENEVA - Texas blues legend Johnny Winter emblazoned himself into the world's consciousness with his tattooed arms churning out lightning-fast guitar riffs and his striking long white hair flowing from under his cowboy hat. His contrasting appearance and devotion to the blues pioneers of the 20th century turbo-charged a career in which he emulated and, ultimately, championed, his childhood hero Muddy Waters and other icons. Winters carved out a wide niche - and became an icon himself - starting in the late 1960s and 1970s with a sound that blues and country singer Tracy Nelson, prominent during the same era with her band Mother Earth, described as "Texas second generation.""He did not overplay, like a lot of white blues guitarists," she said of Winter, who collaborated with the likes of Waters, John Lee Hooker and Jimi Hendrix. "His tone was a little more modern, more electric, but I could see the influences. He stayed faithful. People idolized him." Winter's representative, Carla Parisi, confirmed Thursday that he died in a hotel room just outside Zurich a day earlier at age 70. The statement said his wife, family and bandmates were all saddened by the loss of one of the world's finest guitarists. The cause of death was unclear and authorities have ordered an autopsy, said Zurich police spokeswoman Cornelia Schuoler. She said investigators are mainly looking at "medical causes" and there is no indication that anyone else was involved. Winter was a leading light among the white blues guitar players, including Eric Clapton and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, who followed in the footsteps of the earlier Chicago blues masters. He idolized Waters - and got a chance to produce some of the blues legend's more popular albums. Rolling Stone magazine named Winter one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Music writer Fred Schruers said Winter played a major role in introducing the blues to a new audience. "The real legacy of Johnny Winter is that he brought the blues to an audience in tie-dye that might otherwise have neglected the entire genre - and his timely work producing Muddy Waters only deepened that contribution," said Schruers, author of an upcoming biography of Billy Joel. Winter had been on an extensive tour this year to celebrate his 70th birthday. His last performance was on Saturday at the Lovely Days Festival in Wiesen, Austria. He had recently announced that he would follow up his 2011 album "Roots" with a new studio album, "Step Back," in September featuring collaborators such as Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, Joe Perry, Dr. John and Joe Bonnamassa. John Dawson Winter III was born on Feb. 23, 1944 and raised in Beaumont, Texas. He was the older brother of Edgar Winter, who like him was an albino, and rose to musical fame with the Edgar Winter Group. "Made my first record when I was 15, started playing clubs when I was 15. Started drinking and smoking when I was 15. Sex when I was 15. Fifteen was a big year for me," Winter recalled with a laugh in a documentary released this year, "Johnny Winter: Down & Dirty."

The Labour MP for Rochdale Simon Danczuk called for Sir Peter to be suspended - a demand that was rejected by the Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd. The MP said the failure to act put the vulnerable at continuing risk of rape and sexual abuse."If any frontline officer were facing serious allegations like this they would be suspended immediately," Mr Danczuk said\ http://police-brutality-uk.co.uk/calls-for-greater-manchester-police-chief-to-be-suspended-as-inquiries-into-botched-rape-cases-begin/ Calls for Greater Manchester Police chief to be suspended as inquiries into 'botched' rape cases begin Ten investigations have been launched into alleged mishandling of sexual assault and rape cases by one of Britain's biggest police forces, The Independent can reveal - as its Chief Constable is at the centre of an inquiry into a botched surveillance operation in which a vulnerable teenager was allegedly allowed to enter the residence of Ten investigations have been launched into alleged mishandling of sexual assault and rape cases by one of Britain's biggest police forces, The Independent can reveal - as its Chief Constable is at the centre of an inquiry into a botched surveillance operation in which a vulnerable teenager was allegedly allowed to enter the residence of a known criminal who was suspected of a sex offence. Sir Peter Fahy was facing calls to resign as head of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in the wake of the Independent Police Complaints Commission's (IPCC) announcement that he had been served with criminal and gross misconduct notices following a series of claims by a whistleblower. Two other senior serving officers - a Detective Superintendent and a Detective Chief Inspector - are facing similar inquiries over their involvement in the same case. A retired officer is also being investigated. The Independent understands that the IPCC inquiry will centre on claims that senior officers were so intent on gathering evidence against the known criminal that they apparently overruled calls for the covert surveillance operation to be cancelled to protect the child. A fourth senior GMP officer, Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney - the former deputy head of the new police investigation into the Hillsborough disaster - is also to be investigated for alleged misconduct over the disposal of body parts from victims of the serial killer Harold Shipman, the IPCC said. The crisis facing some of the most senior figures at the force comes as an investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism found that GMP was facing more IPCC inquiries into its response to sex crimes than any other force. In the past two and a half years the watchdog has launched a total of 10 inquiries into alleged mishandling of sexual assault and rape complaints by officers in Greater Manchester. These 10 include the operation against the known criminal. The Labour MP for Rochdale Simon Danczuk called for Sir Peter to be suspended - a demand that was rejected by the Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd. The MP said the failure to act put the vulnerable at continuing risk of rape and sexual abuse. "If any frontline officer were facing serious allegations like this they would be suspended immediately," Mr Danczuk said."Several months ago I raised concerns about GMP's response to sexual violence complaints with the Chief Constable. My view is that this is a cultural problem - the culture needs to change, from the top. Because that hasn't happened, the force is not learning lessons from what has gone before," he added. Sir Peter said he was faced with "making complex decisions on a daily basis" and that it was right that this should be held to account as part of the latest investigation. Mr Lloyd said there was no evidence to justify the Chief Constable's suspension. The Bureau's investigation revealed that GMP accounts for more than a fifth of all inquiries relating to investigations of sexual assault and rape started by the police watchdog in England and Wales between 1 January 2012 and 17 June 2014. The data shows there have been more investigations into handling of sex crimes at GMP, which is responsible for the protection of 2.7 million people, than at the Metropolitan Police , the country's biggest force. Among those cases currently being examined are those of Tracy Shelvey, who killed herself when her alleged attacker was cleared of rape after two trials involving seven victims, and Linzi Ashton. Ms Ashton was killed by her ex-partner who had a history of violence and even offered to give himself up to police shortly before her savage murder in 2013. At the Met, which has repeatedly been criticised over the last decade for its management of sexual offence complaints, only six inquiries have begun since 2012. No similar investigations have taken place in that time at Merseyside Police, West Yorkshire or West Midlands Police . Two of the 10 inquiries relate to the force's handling of rape allegations that were made as recently as November 2013. The publication of an internal inquiry, supervised by the IPCC, into the force's handling of the Rochdale investigation into grooming was due to be published last month but was postponed. This internal inquiry is not included in the 10 inquiries opened since 2012. So far the 10 investigations have resulted in disciplinary action being taken against officers in two cases whilst a further eight are still active. The majority of the investigations into GMP since 2012 have been run by the police watchdog, meaning the complaints are considered particularly serious. A report by published earlier this year found GMP had failed to record almost 30 per cent of crimes reported to it. The report, which focused on 13 forces, highlighted a failure to record rapes. However the report did not specify whether GMP was one of the forces which were falling short in this regard. The force has also been heavily criticised by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary this year for "serious weaknesses" in its response to the victims of domestic violence. Chief Inspector Mike Dawson, of GMP's Professional Standards Branch, said in common with other forces there had been an increase in complaints in relation to sexual offences."Investigations into these serious sexual offences deal with difficult, serious and sensitive issues which can often lead to allegations of mishandling," he said. He added: "GMP's approach to investigating sexual offences is victim-focused and we work extremely hard with our partners to provide care and support to those who come forward and report what has happened to them."We recognise that we do not always get things right and are constantly striving to improve what we do." Chief suspects: Other top officers investigated The investigation into Sir Peter Fahy is one of several into the top ranks of policing. The Chief Constable of West Yorkshire is suspended on full pay as police in Northern Ireland investigate allegations of bribery and misconduct over the awarding of a vehicle contract. Mark Gilmore (pictured below), who spent more than 20 years in service in Northern Ireland, was suspended in June following the arrest of seven men. Mr Gilmore denies any wrongdoing. He was the successor at West Yorkshire to Sir Norman Bettison, who quit after he was referred to the police watchdog over claims he was involved in a cover-up over the Hillsborough disaster. Nick Gargan, the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset, was suspended in May for alleged inappropriate advances towards young women working on his force. While he was suspended, he was told that he faced a criminal investigation into claims that he leaked emails about police business. In addition, the Crown Prosecution Service has been sent papers on two other serving chief constables, following an investigation into claims that their former force, Staffordshire, withheld details of activities by a corrupt unit. The police watchdog investigated 14 officers, including the current chiefs at Gloucestershire, Suzette Davenport, and Northamptonshire, Adrian Lee. Five junior officers have been cleared. A decision is pending on the remaining nine officers. Only one chief officer has been sacked since the late 1970s. Sean Price, the former head of Cleveland police, was removed for gross misconduct in 2012 after lying about his role in the recruitment of the daughter of the head of the former police authority. The force was at the centre of a long-running investigation into corruption led by the current head of the National Crime Agency but prosecutors ruled that no one should be charged. Profile: Sir Peter Fahy Sir Peter Fahy caused a stir this week when he called for police to have expanded powers to examine medical records without an individual's consent, to help officers deal with vulnerable people. It was just the latest intervention by one of the senior officers most willing to confront publicly the thorny issues of modern policing. The IPCC inquiry he now faces comes after a 33-year police career in five forces which included a spell as Chief Constable of Cheshire before he was promoted to become head of Greater Manchester Police. Sir Peter, married with four children, was knighted in 2012 and has held a number of senior posts forming policy for the service. His force was charged with breaching health and safety laws following the shooting by his officers of an unarmed man, Anthony Grainger, in 2012. Although Sir Peter was named on the charge sheet, he does not bear criminal responsibility for the shooting. His force has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Muslim convert Brustchom Ziamani, 19, was arrested in East London on Tuesday with a rucksack containing a knife and hammer wrapped in an Islamic flag, it was alleged. Wearing a black Call of Duty t-shirt and dark tracksuit bottoms Ziamani, of Camberwell, south London, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning charged with engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. He refused to sit down and stood through throughout the brief hearing. Prosecutor Mark Dawson said Ziamani had extreme ideological material in his rucksack. He added: 'He was arrested at 4.30pm on Tuesday with a knife and a hammer in a bag on his back wrapped in an Islamic flag. 'He is 19 and of previous good character. He said to (a female teenager) he is going to commit a ... terrorist atrocity either on troops or members of the government.' Mr Dawson told the court that officers had scoured Ziamani's computer and had 'three disks worth of material' to analyse. The young terror suspect, who is British born but whose family is of Congolese origin, stood in the dock with his hands in his pockets during the hearing. Judge John Zani, told the defendant he would be remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on September 12. The was no application for bail.

Respectability and Racism

by Patricia L. Dickson 8/26/14 I recently came across an article entitled "No One Treats African-Americans Worse Than We Treat Each Other: The troubling self-flagellation in Ferguson's black community" published in the New Republic. When I first read the title, I thought to myself, here it comes, this article is going to tell it like it is. However, after reading the first paragraph, I realized that it was yet another America is still a racist country tripe. The author is Julia Ioffe, a Russian-American journalist and blogger. She traveled to Ferguson, Missouri to interview mostly prominent black figures about the events unfolding in the black community. What surprised me about this article is that I learned some new black Liberal narratives to support the ongoing meme that all of black America's problems stem from white America. Although the narratives are a stretch and require great gymnastic skill, they help me to understand how black Liberal intellectuals define the so-called real cause of the problems in poor black communities. One of the people interviewed by the author explained that the black middle class is largely responsible for the problems in poor black neighborhoods because they turned their backs on the community. As an example, he stated that black lawyers and judges are not looking out for the black boys in the prison pipeline by sharing their knowledge. However, he did not explain what knowledge these lawyers and judges are supposed to share or how the black boys ended up in prison in the first place. He overlooked the fact that blacks commit the majority of crimes in America. He also did not place any of the blame on the parents of the boys that are in prison. He made the following claim: "No one treats African-Americans worse than we treat each other," he said. "We were outraged when George Zimmerman killed a black boy, but Zimmerman was taught by watching black people kill black people. He learned it from us. We planted the seed." While I do agree that black people definitely kill more black people, I do not agree with his premise of why George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, and neither do the facts of the case. Some of the people interviewed made sound logical assessments about the problems in the black community; however, the author called those statements self-criticism - or self-flagellation, a phenomenon that is referred to by African-American historians as the "politics of respectability." The author quoted Michael Dawson, a political scientist and director of the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture at the University of Chicago: Respectability, in essence, is about policing the behavior in your community to make sure people are behaving "properly," so as to not attract unwelcome attention from whites - "with 'properly' being a normatively white middle class presentation," says Dawson. In feminist discourse, a similar phenomenon among women is described as internalizing the patriarchal gaze. That is, women see themselves as the men in charge want to see them - feminine, sexy, pliant - and then behave and dress accordingly. Respectability is the same thing, but with blacks internalizing the white gaze. According to Dawson and other black writers, respectability does not stem from a conscious decision by a black person to have self-respect, but from a fear of what white America thinks about them. They do not feel that middle-class black Americans have genuinely developed self-respect. In other words, they are acting white to guard against being discriminated against by white America or to prevent being harassed by police. The article accuses middle-class black Americans of not wanting to associate with poor blacks because of that fear: Preaching respectability reflects a class and generational fear, by black people who feel they have escaped the fate of poor and disenfranchised blacks, and have entered respectable society. By putting distance between themselves and less affluent blacks, or those wearing baggy pants, there's a hope that they won't be treated like them. All of these theories by black intellectuals are used to reinforce the idea that America has not changed and is still a racist country. Why else would they claim middle-class blacks have to act white in order to appear acceptable? However, Jelani Cobb, who teaches African-American history at the University of Connecticut, says that preaching respectability sidesteps the issue of institutionalized racism. She contends that racism is entrenched, and that we have limited capacity to determine how much of it we are exposed to in our lives. To prove her claim, she reached back to the 2009 incident involving Henry Louis "Skip" Gates. She contends that even he, a respectable and renowned black person, is not shielded from racism. She claimed that he was handcuffed because he is black. According to a police report, he was handcuffed and booked for disorderly conduct after "exhibiting loud and tumultuous behavior." Furthermore, what respectable person would respond to a police officer that asked him to step outside with "I'll speak with your mama outside?" Ms. Cobb left out that important detail in order to boost her claim that even a renowned professor was handcuffed for no other reason except he was black. Just as Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown were shot for, no other reason except they were black. Nowhere in the article did any of the people interviewed blame President Obama (the first black president) for any of the problems in the black community. Although they were quick to blame black middle-class Americans, they overlooked Obama's treatment of blacks. The article tries to make successful, moral, law-abiding black Americans feel guilty for building a better life for themselves and their families by claiming blacks are acting a certain way to please whites (acting white). I am sure that neither of the intellectual blacks interviewed lives anywhere near the black communities that they claim other middle class blacks have shunned. I am amazed at how easily Liberals can let lies roll off their keyboards. Bill O'Reilly outlined systematically the problems that are facing black America and he laid the blame right at the foot of President Obama and the so-called black leadership. Race relations in America are spinning out of control. Claiming that poor blacks are somehow disenfranchised is an example of the lies that are told to incite riots. How are blacks disenfranchised? Disenfranchised means, deprived of the rights of citizenship especially the right to vote. If poor blacks are disenfranchised, who is it that keeps electing Democrats? http://www.stubbornthings.org/respectability-racism/#more-9923

Journalist Roughed Up And Removed From Georgia GOP Event

Over the past week there's been something of a brouhaha surrounding a journalist being forcibly removed from a local Republican event in Georgia. The journalist was Nydia Tisdale, who went to Burt's Farm in Dawsonville, Georgia, to record video of speeches by David Perdue, the state's GOP nominee for U.S. Senate, as well as Gov. Nathan Deal (R) and others. Tisdale runs the website AboutForsyth.com . Tisdale captured most of the Aug. 23 confrontation on video, which she has since posted to YouTube. In the video, Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens could be seen giving a speech when he criticized the debate performance of the state's Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Michelle Nunn. "I thought I was going to absolutely puke," Hudgens said, which sparked laughter from the crowd. Hudgens could then be seen in the video directing his attention toward Tisdale. "I don't know why you're videotaping," Hudgens said to the journalist. About 10 minutes later in the video, a hand aggressively blocked Tisdale's camera. The footage showed her being pushed out of the building and into an adjacent one. It was unclear who pushed her, but at some point a Dawson County sheriff's official appeared in the video. Tisdale asked the official if she could get her purse to give him her identification. "Nope, you're going to jail," the officer said in the video."I've been real nice, now you're going to jail for resisting arrest if you do not stop," the official said. By then, the sheriff's official had Tisdale with her hands behind her back pressed against a desk. He never identified himself in the video. Another man could be heard saying, "Will you please stop ma'am? We've asked you multiple times." Whole story here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/nydia-tisdale-dawson-county-sheriff-burts-farm
